Details

Diatone has upgraded the design from one of their best selling quads on the TyrantS. These ARF's now come with BL Heli_S ESC's capable of multi shot, and powerful 2205-2300KV motors. These come pre-assembled and only require a receiver and battery! You will not be disappointed with this arf! The brains of this setup is based on the SPRacing EVO flight controller, with easy pin connectors. This makes setting up your ship extremely easy! The power distribution board has a 5 and 12V regulator to power the camera and video TX. The frame is a sold 4mm Carbon fiber which is extremely solid! The video transmitter is a full 40 Channel with Raceband, and is the same as the SP2. You also get an antenna. There is 1 set of props included, a allen head wrench and battery straps.

Version notes

  • These have V3 flight controllers
  • There is no onboard 3.3V regulator for the Specktrum Satellite receiver. An included 3.3V regulator is provided to power your receiver.
You can run 5" props on this and I would recommend 5040 3 Bladed, such as Dal Cyclones or Gemfan Master Series.

I love my Diatone Tyrant S. YouTube vids helped me solder up my receiver, set it up in Betaflight and Roberts ya mutha brotha!

Beginners do your research into this hobby. There are loads of knowledgeable people out there sharing everything and more you'd like to understand about FPV Racing style quads.

I did't buy my Tyrant S from 2DogRC. I've only recently found this site. However, after using the "Contact Us" option to ask if this sites stock was in the US, Mark called me personally and answered all my questions! What customer service!

2DogRC will be my first stop for my Diatone needs.

Thanks for reaching out to me.

Got one of these for my Father, we both love it. Great quality parts and easy to set-up.
I noticed the XT60 being tight and found the SMA's nut was pushing on the XT60. Rotated that a bit so the flat of the nut was against the XT60 instead of the pointed part.
    Very Happy with this Quadcopter.

This is my first purchase from 2DogRC and they seem to be a first class operation who cares.. great communication and shipping, based in the US so you can actually call and speak to someone, excellent help videos too.. will definitely buy there again.

I'm not a great pilot or a quad guru, just the average flyer who likes learning, tinkering, building them, and trying to get better at it all like many of you. But I am an engineer with pretty good mechanical and common sense. I don't intend to be negative, but just give you the observations I wish someone would've given me before I purchased.

Once it's in the air it flies great! Unless you're an expert pilot, you'll have plenty of room to grow and learn from it. It handles crashes with ease.. very robust.. awesome quality carbon fiber & metal standoffs.. will take alot of abuse before breakage.. really strong built & durable frame.

First impression after opening the box was.. wow, it's SO small.. From the photos I've seen, I thought it as a bit of a stretched X, but is actually squashed X (wider side to side than front to back).. which is entirely MY misconception, and not a bad thing, just was a surprise.

But herein lies my complaints.. everything is way too cramped. I use Dom V3 goggles and put a 16:9 camera on everything so they match and the wider view helps me. Most of you like the HS1177 or similar. First thing I did was try to put a Runcam Eagle on it but disappointingly, no standard size cam will fit.. it's just too narrow.. if they'd just made it maybe 3mm wider it would. Real bummer cause this board cam handles light poorly, and I cannot find a board cam in 16:9 thus far.

I installed the Spektrum receiver they recommend.. there's one spot for it to stick to the top plate behind the FC. Finding a place for it's antennas to not get damaged by props is a challenge. Not sure how important it is to get them 90deg apart.. all I read says they should be.. but couldn't accomplish this. Ended up putting zip ties on each rear standoff sticking out the rear.. heated slightly to bend down a bit more away from props & heat shrinking antennas to them.. nowhere near 90deg but if you did they would be right under props.. so far has not been an issue so 90deg rule may not be a big deal.

Needs to be 2 or 3mm taller too. I could not even plug in a battery.. the SMA connector is squashed down into the XT60 connector so hard that it was pushing in on the yellow plastic to the point the battery can't be plugged in! If you look at website photos you'll see a close up of the rear showing the SMA/XT60.. you can see it bending the XT60 inward slightly.. tried turning the SMA & swapping washers on it but no joy, had to cut the top of the XT60 out to plug battery in!

Needs a 2" pigtail on the XT60!!.. since it's soldered to the board, the battery leads are banjo tight to be able to reach and plug in, even when placed as far to the rear as it will go (pushing CG to the rear instead of centered). Everything is TOO DANG TIGHT. The battery can't be placed so leads come out the left or right, or they would get likely cut - the battery body is just mm from the prop tips. So it has to be strapped so leads come out the top or bottom.. if you have long leads, may can come out top and still reach XT60, mine are not, so have to let them come out the bottom.. this puts pressure where leads come out of battery and worried about damaging it, compounded by having to strap it down VERY tightly because if it moves even slightly left to right, it will be cut into by props. Considered trying to strap it to the bottom, but screws are not countersunk.. battery damage would be next. Lack of width on top plate is also why I didn't put antenna zip ties on holes in top plate - just too close to props.

Flight controller is mashed down too.. so cramped you can't even slide the battery strap between it and the top plate for fear of damage.. had to re-loosen all screws just to force the strap through, then tightening down just squashes FC more.. was worried, but no issues from it so far.

Will 3-5mm extra height and width actually kill flight performance?? If you COULD tell the difference, you're not interested in this quad anyway. So it flies great, but there will be gnashing of teeth beforehand. It's paid for so I will enjoy and learn as much as I can from it, but would NOT buy it again. Sorry so long.

    JD

We do appreciate the review and JD has taken some time to write this one. I would like to point out some things.
1)A HS1177 camera does fit on this frame. It is not a drop in substitution. I used the U mount that is included with a HS117 and cut the U to just above the first mounting whole. I do agree the stock camera is not the greatest, but Diatone was trying for a specific price point on this ship.

2)The battery XT60 do fit snug, because on the SMA connector, but we have not had any other complaints on this. I have sent this information to Diatone as well.

3)I recommend mounting the battery on the bottom, that is where mine is. Counter sunk screws may help, but the TyrantS bottom is similar to almost every X frame on the market when it comes to the profile of the bottom. Also by mounting the battery on the bottom there is no problem with the battery strap reaching the XT60, and I actually prefer the XT60 hard mounted (personal preference on this I guess). Mounting the battery on the bottom, you avoid the battery sliding into the propellers. I learned that on my EMAX 200 which is similar. If you do mount the battery on top, I recommend 2 battery straps to hold it in place.

4)I would NOT recommend wrapping the battery to the top plate only. I wrap the battery strap around the whole ship, top and bottom plate. If you strap the battery to the top plate only and crash HARD, then the battery can rip the whole top plate off. Again mounting the battery on the bottom avoids this problem as well.

I am sorry you feel that you would not buy another one. This is my go to ship for flying in close proximity of objects and racing. It can take alot of abuse and is a great ship to learn new tricks on or fine tune your race skills. I have sent your concerns to Diatone so they can take that into consideration on future upgrades.

Ordered this over 2 weeks ago. After figuring out I couldn't configure with my Mac OS (Sierra) I had to buy a cheap pc to connect to betaflight. After many evenings combing the internet on how to videos finally determined that ESC 2 is bad. Several emails between 2dogrc and now emails with hong kong I still have a paperweight. Still waiting on resolution. Maybe I'll just stick with my RC airplanes.

To the stick throwers, no you will not go to drone nationals with it but who is really going there anyway? Also, note that you will get service second to none when working with 2dogRC!
